    License in remoted desktop deleted

    Guys,

I'm new here, I have a problem in one of my server, it cannot be remote using remote desktop. I can ping the server and I can connect to the server via netmeeting. In my deeper investigation I found our that the remote desktop administration license is deleted. I did tried to install the terminal licencsing but it did'nt work. I don't want to format the server because its a live file server. Thanks, and more power

What flavor server is it ?

My guess is you had it as a terminal server, which will quit working after 90? days if you dont have the right licenses.

If its just a file server that you need to RDP into for Admin work, then you dont install the terminal server portion.

The Terminal Server cant be on the server, unless you have licenses for it. Otherwise all RDP sessions will be refused.

Assuming it's Terminal Server (Application Mode), I would assuming removing Terminal Server from the server should do it.   But probably a bad guess (Assuming it's not a licensing issue before as mentioned).

The other one, (I'll have to dig in my notes) is there is a registry key on the client computer indicating it's license.  You may have to delete that key on the workstation (not the server).

The other bit to seeing what does work is can you connect if you go to start Run (or just Start and start typing away in Vista/2k8)

    mstsc -console (XP/2003)

    mstsc -admin (Vista/2K8)

to access a console session. (Local console, uses RDP to connect, is not technically a terminal session)

I'll see if I can find that registry key client side.

Well all else fails, make an offering to the computer gods. Preferably in small unmarked bills.
