- SBS 2003 R2 has RTM'd and you may be wondering what is new in SBS. Well wonder no further! Read on to find out what is new.
One of the first things you ma notice is that SBS 2003 R2 installs Exchange Server 2003 with Service Pack 2. What is the big deal with SP2? Well for one the Intelligent Message Filter is included by default, and you can now expand the mailbox store size to 75GB. One big change also allows your SBS 2003 R2 CAL to connect users to additional Exchange 2003 servers in the domain.
- SBS 2003 R2 Premium edition now ships with SQL Server 2005 Workgroup Edition. You can use this for your LOB database or upgrade Sharepoint to use SQL which then adds search functionality to your document libraries. As with Exchange, the R2 CALs also allow you to connect to other SQL 2005 Workgroup Edition servers in the domain.
- Windows Software Update Services is now integrated with SBS 2003 R2. You could always install WSUS on previous SBS editions. SBS 2003 R2 adds centralized patch and update management for computers that are on the Windows SBS 2003 R2. This is a great way to keep the servers, workstations and applications up to date. WSUS updates Windows 2000 and newer, Office XP and 2003, Exchagne Server 2003 and IMF, ISA Server and SQL 2005.
- Along with expanded CALs for SQL and Exchange, the SBS 2003 R2 CAL also includes access to other Windows servers on the network. - Contrary to what you may think, most of the Windows 2003 R2 features are not included with SBS 2003 R2.
One of the best features of Windows 2003 R2 is included and that is the File Server Resource Manager. I did a series on FSRM a while ago and it is a popular feature.
