Introduction to ADMT Part 2 - Moving Objects

Sponsor

If you read Part 1 of this series, you have created a trust between the 2000 source domain and 2003 target domain, installed ADMT and opened up the ADMT tool. This part will go over running user, group and computer migrations and Part 3 will cover reporting.

Note: Every migration will be different and this series does not attempt to cover the entire process. It should leave you with an understanding of ADMT and have you on your way to planning your migration using ADMT.

With ADMT installed we can start looking at some of the options it provides to move objects. With ADMT open, right-click on Active Directory Migration Tool in the left MMC pane and you will see a list of wizards you can use to move various AD objects.

Selecting one of these options will bring up a wizard from which you can test your settings, or if you are ready to go, migrate the objects.

Select the source and target domains .....

..... and select the objects to move. This example is moving user accounts.

Select the target OU in the target domain .....

..... and choose what to do with passwords. In this example I have chosen to create new complex passwords for all the accounts. The passwords will be stored in a TXT file which you can save anywhere.

The next option allows you to enable or disable the newly created accounts, as well as what to do with the old accounts.

The last three screens allow you to define some custom options to the object migration and handle naming conflicts. Once you are done click Finish and a status screen will be displayed with real time results.

This example ran a test from which we can run a report (more on reports later) however by selecting Migrate Now at the start of the wizard the user accounts would get moved.

(Note: Contrary to the above screenshots when I ran the actual migration I chose to disable the target accounts)

Moving other objects is just as easy albeit each will have different options for you to select. For example when moving computer accounts, you can add a prefix or suffix to the computer name and schedule an automatic reboot.
