Using Pro Tips in SCVMM 2008 R2

System Center Virtual Machine Manager 2008 and Operations Manager 2007 R2 can be integrated to provide reporting and a feature called Performance Resource Optimization (PRO).  Using PRO, Operations Manager will pass alerts raised in relation to the virtualization hosts and/or VM(s) to the Virtual Machine Manager console through something called a Pro Tip.

Pro Tips

Implementing PRO and reporting is pretty straight forward but before you start add the SCVMM Service Account to the SCOM Advanced Operators role as it will require permissions to SCOM.  Once complete insert the SCVMM install media into your SCOM server and run the SCVMM Setup.

Pro Tips 1

Select Configure Operations Manager.  You will need to provide some basic information including the SCVMM servername, service account credentials and the tool will install the SCVMM Management Console on the server as well as importing the SCVMM 2008 R2 management packs.

(Note: You will have to remove any existing SCVMM 2008 management packs)

Once that installation is complete launch the management console and go to Administration – System Center and click on Operations Manager Reporting URL.  Enter the URL for your SCOM Reporting server.  This is optional but recommended.

Pro Tips 2

Next click on Operations Manager Server and enter the FQDN of your SCOM Root Management Server.

Pro Tips 3

Next go to Administration – General and click on PRO Settings and check the box next to Enable PRO Tips for Critical and Warning level alerts.

Pro Tips 6

Finally go to the Host Group properties and enable PRO Tips under the PRO tab.

Pro Tips 7

Now to test out your PRO Tips you can use a tool like Prime95 to stress the CPU on one of your Hyper-V hosts and after a few minutes of 100% CPU utilization you will see a PRO Tip generated.

Pro Tips 4

You can select to Implement or Dismiss the tip and of course all jobs are logged.
